I’m sure we all have moisturisers or have used one previously, but how do you choose which one is the best or even right for your skin type? There is a rise in men's skincare products that can appear overwhelming so we are here to help you find the right men's moisturiser for you. What is a moisturiser?

A moisturiser is a cream that does exactly what it says on the tin, moisturise. Moistrusiers work by keeping your skin hydrated and locking in the moisture that it naturally produces. Our skin is the last organ to receive nutrients, so moisturising it is an important part, or should be an important part of your skincare routine. Keeping your skin moisturised reduces the appearance of ageing, by keeping your skin soft and giving it a healthy glow. I feel like a lot of men won’t moisturise because of the fragrance, but what you don’t know is that there are plenty of moisturisers suitable for men, without making you smell like a rose.

Why Should we use them?

When you wash, shower or even step outside into harsh weather conditions, you rinse away the moisture that your body provides, moisturising helps to retain it. Shaving is a big part of most men's routine, moisturising afterwards reduces irritation, shaving rashes and helps give you that clean shaven look you desire.

Skin Type?

There are so many different types of skin, when picking the right moisturiser this is definitely something you should consider.

Firstly let's talk about Normal Skin. What is normal? It's a broad term that people are using less in today's society, but when it comes to skin type it basically means well balanced. If you have normal skin you don’t suffer from over oily skin, or skin that is too dry.

Dry Skin, this one is fairly obvious, it means your skin is dry. If this is you, you should probably moisturise more. Skin becomes dry because it doesn’t produce enough sebum, resulting in your skin lacking the lipids which help your skin to retain its naturally produced moisture. Skin has a protective layer that acts as a shield to the elements and all the struggles our skin goes through daily, no lipids not protective shield.

p>Oily skin, again pretty self explanatory. This skin type has an increased sebum amount. The overproduction of sebum is known as seborrhea. If you’re unsure if this is you, look in the mirror and you’ll notice a shiny finish.

Combination skin means your made up of a little bit of everything. Most people put themselves into this category because it’s the easiest thing to do, but I would recommend thinking about your skin type carefully before selecting your moisturiser. Saying that using a bog standard moisturiser won’t neccarserilly damage your skin further but it won’t focus on the areas you need the most.

Another thing to consider when you’re choosing your moisturiser is how sensitive your skin is. Putting certain synthetic ingredients onto your skin can cause irritation on the skin. Fragranced products usually contain a mix of ingredients that aren’t declared on the bottle. Another point worth mentioning is whether or not your moisturiser contains spf. Remember to save the ones with spf for day time use only and note that it isn't strong enough to use a suncream but perfect for day to day life.
