What inspires you to create new products?
The power of nature and the benefits of botanicals in our lives is our everyday inspiration, as well as the new knowledgeable generation aware of what “nasty” ingredients in cosmetics mean to their skin and who are very conscious about the effect of our choices as consumers towards the environment.
Tell us about the process of getting a product to market?
It can take anything from two to three years for us to launch a new a new products; extensive scientific research takes place to guarantee the efficacy of the ingredients we use and making sure the precise dosage of an ingredient is used to work in synergy with the other two or three key ingredients in a formulation to bring the benefits to our customers’ skin.
Lots of research takes place in the packaging process too - as a sustainable brandm, we avoid the use of plastic as much as the packaging industry allows and we put a lot of pressure on our suppliers to bring the best and most innovative solutions towards environmentally friendly packaging.
Do you have any favourite ingredients at the moment?
Ylang Ylang - this plant has traditionally been used in aromatherapy because the essential oil is known for its stress and tension soothing properties. When applied topically, studies show it can soothe inflammation and irritations. It was found ylang ylang oil can improve circulation and it is also great for hydrating and conditioning skin
Why is it important for you to use natural ingredients?
Everything comes from nature - there is an old saying that “if you cannot eat it, you should not apply it your skin either.” At Dr Jackson’s we are great believers in that approach.
Where do you source your ingredients from?
Different places. We work with communities and suppliers around the world to provide the best quality of sustainability and ethically sourced ingredients. Two key ingredients in our formulations - Kigelia and Baobab come from Zimbabwe.
What makes your products so effective?
Dr Jackson was a specialist in melanoma during his time at the department of dermatology as King’s College, we he researched ingredients that had special healing properties for the skin. This is our products came to be based on the principles of pharmacognosy: the study of natural medicines derived from plants and their traditional uses.
Drawing on a combined 30+ years of leading scientific research between Dr Jackson and Dr Bystrom, our Chief Science Officer, we use techniques that mimic the way natural ingredients are extracted at the source.
We formulate products using the best ingredients nature has to offer to care for all skin types in the most natural and effective way possible, with extra benefits for problem or sensitive skin. Our formulations are proven to be effective, safe and environmentally-friendly, without the harmful additives that have been traditionally used in cosmetics. We replace those old standards with the best botanicals or non-toxic ingredients which are known to be kind to our customers skin, meaning no parabens, sulphates, no PEGS, no carcinogens, no synthetic fragrances and no artificial colouring. We are not of a natural cosmetics trend, but rather a science-led company making every effort to provide clean and safe beauty.

What is your favourite/best selling product and why do think that is?
It is difficult to choose one - our sales are quite even across the product range, they all have a different purpose.
:A super lightweight, velvety moisturiser to nourish, hydrate and rejuevenate, offered with or without SPF30/UVA/UVB protection.
: An intensely rich, nourishing moisturiser with a fragrant scent to regenerate and calm.
:A nourishing blend of 100% natural oils for face and body - calendula and arnica are powerful botanicals to calm problematic skin.
: A refreshing and toning gel for the face and around the eyes - ideal after sun exposure or to combat jet lag!
A moisturising body oul with a relaxing scent of Damask Rose.
How does being based in Bristol shape you as a brand?
Bristol is a young, green and vibrant city with lots of start-ups and a hub for recent graduates coming out of the universities of Bristol and Bath, which bring refreshing ideas and good energy to a young brand as Dr Jackson 's.
How many awards have you won?
We participate in very little in the beauty industries competitions, so up till now we have 6 awards in total.
How important is beauty from within important to you?
We believe that us what we apply to our bodies is just as important as what we consume to be able to achieve healthy and beautiful skin.
We offer a holistic approach to skincare and health -clean and safe cosmetics paired with organic herbal teas.
What extra measures do you take to ensure your sustainability?
At Dr Jackson’s, we’re more than a pretty face. Just as much research goes into our minimalist packaging as the wonderful formulas inside them. We avoid foul printing, plastic wrapping, artificially coated or bleached paper, and polyester ribbons. Instead, we;re committed to seeking our green alternatives, from recyclable glass kars and recycled Kraft paper boxes, printed with soya ink, ro our tea jar seals, made from biodegradable eucalyptus wood pulp.In our approach to reduce waste, as well as our carbon footprint, we encourage customers to recycle and compost our packaging and to reuse our empties. In everything we do, we make every effort to care for both your skin and the planet at the same time. Our products are vegan and we never test on animals.
What does the future hold for Dr Jackson’s?
As a young company, we have created a solid base for a healthy lifestyle and wellness brand developing products based on the principles of pharmacognosy that can continue to grow and exist for many years to come, and more than just a brand, we hope we will be seen as pioneers and part of this movement happening now, that won’t stop and will continue to inspire future generations. There is a planet B.
